The Technics SL1200: My Story

As a DJ, I’ve seen the evolution of many forms of music technology over the years. But even with all the advancements, there are some classic DJ products that will always hold a special place in my heart. One such product is the Technics SL 1200 turntable.

I still remember the day when my older brother picked up his first pair of shiny new silver SL1200 MK2s. The excitement when he brought them home in their big heavy boxes. The flight cases he bought to keep them protected in and the use both he and I got out of them over the years. He still has them, has had them serviced and they're both still going strong. These turntables I’ve often compared to various other decks I’ve used over the years. I’ve had time with turntables by Vestax, Stanton, Pioneer and Audio Technica. My brothers Technics SL1200 MK2s have always been the benchmark I compared them all to.

The Origin of Technics SL 1200 Turntable

The Technics SL 1200 turntable was first introduced in 1972 by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (now known as Panasonic Corporation). It was designed as a high-end audio turntable for audiophiles and music enthusiasts. But it quickly became a favourite among DJs due to its durability, sound quality, and precise pitch control.

The SL 1200 series was originally designed to be used in high-end home audio systems with the SL1200 MK1. Its heavy-duty build and high torque direct-drive motor made it a favourite among audiophiles. But as DJs began to realise the potential of the turntable, it quickly became the industry standard for DJs around the world.

Iconic Design

The design of the Technics SL 1200 turntable is iconic. In 1979, Technics further refined the design from the MK1 and released the MK2 turntable that has maintained it’s iconic design ever since. Its sleek silver (SL1200) or black (SL1210) design with a silver tonearm and pitch control sliders has become synonymous with the DJ industry. The turntable features a direct-drive motor, which means that the platter is directly connected to the motor. This eliminates any belt slippage or lag time, resulting in an incredibly precise pitch control.

The turntable also features a unique suspension system that isolates the platter from the base, reducing vibration and improving sound quality. The tonearm is made from lightweight aluminium and features a low-mass design for improved tracking.

Precise Pitch Control

One of the most notable features of the Technics SL 1200 turntable is its pitch control. The turntable features a pitch control slider that allows DJs to adjust the speed of the platter by +/- 8% or +/- 16%. This precise pitch control made it possible for DJs to seamlessly mix tracks together, creating a new genre of music.

The Evolution of Technics SL 1200 Turntable

The original Technics SL 1200 turntable was priced at about $385 when it was released in 1972. While this was a high price point at the time, it was worth it for the audiophiles and DJs who appreciated the quality and durability of the turntable.

Over the years, the Technics SL 1200 turntable series has gone through various changes and updates. The MK2 version was released in 1979 and featured a few improvements, including a brighter strobe light and improved pitch control. The MK3 version was released in 1989 and featured a redesigned tonearm with better tracking and improved anti-skate control.

In 1997, the Technics SL 1200 MK5 was released. This version featured improved pitch control and an even brighter strobe light. It also included a new pitch reset button, making it easier for DJs to quickly return the pitch to zero.

In 2002, the Technics SL 1200 MK6 was released. This version featured a digital pitch control display and improved anti-vibration technology. It also had a new blue LED light instead of the traditional red light.

Legacy and Popularity

The Technics SL 1200 turntable series has had a significant impact on the DJ industry. Its precise pitch control made it possible for DJs to create seamless mixes and push the boundaries of what was possible with music. Its durability and reliability made it a favourite among DJs who needed equipment that could withstand the rigours of constant use. This reliability has helped the turntable achieve it legendary status. Stories of turntables being restored to full working order having been rescued from waste dumpsters are not unheard of. Specialist repairers have sprung up all around the world, making a living out of restoring and enhancing this unique HiFi product.

Today, the Technics SL 1200 turntable is still in high demand among DJs and audiophiles. While the turntable is no longer being produced by Panasonic Corporation in the high numbers as before, there are still plenty of new and used models available on the market.

Buying An SL1200

If you’re looking to purchase a Technics SL 1200 turntable, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure you’re purchasing from a reputable seller. Due to the popularity of the turntable, there are many counterfeit models on the market. These can be made up of a mixed bag of original parts taken from old decks to fake parts found online. It's important to do your research and purchase from a seller with a good reputation to ensure that you're getting an authentic model.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Technics SL 1200 turntable has gone through many different versions and updates over the years. Depending on your needs and budget, you may want to consider purchasing an older model or a newer version with more advanced features.

It's also important to consider the condition of the turntable when purchasing used models. Look for signs of wear and tear, and make sure that all of the components are in working order. If purchasing online, make sure to ask for detailed photos and a description of the turntable's condition before making a purchase. If possible it’s always advisable to see the turntable(s) in person to examine it in detail.
